Dr. Reid explores his own criminal mind

Laura Dahl send me an email about a great article she wrote. She took a look at the comparison between his two characters, Dr. Reid and Bart from the film ‘How To Be A Serial Killer’. It is a great article and you should go and read it. Here is a little part from it…

No one knows the criminal mind better than Dr. Spencer Reid, of the CBS series Criminal Minds, so who better to cast as the eager apprentice to a cold-blooded murderer in the movie How to be a Serial Killer, than the same clever actor – my brother, Matthew Gray Gubler.

Matthew plays Bart, a simple video store clerk who anxiously accepts the invitation to learn all the ins and outs of serial killing under the tutelage of a seasoned professional, Mike, played by Dameon Clarke.

Bart becomes the audience’s eyes and through his perspective we watch as this reserved and tortured character fluffs up with confidence and gains a sense of serenity by finally finding his purpose in life. That purpose just happens to be murder.

I found it fascinating how similar Matthew’s two, seemingly contrasting characters, really are. It’s as though Reid and Bart started out as the same person, but through a series of distinctly different life choices, developed into completely opposite creatures with disparate beliefs and ethics.

They’re both socially awkward. They both long to find their place in society, and they both gravitate to a life in crime. Criminal Minds the series is fundamentally based on the methodology that one must “become” a criminal in order to catch a criminal. If that’s true, Reid must know Bart pretty darn well.

Thanks so much Laura!

Matthew posted a new Blog on his MySpace, talking about his knee injury and the involved surgeries he had to have. Here is a little bit from his blog, make sure you read the full thing on his page.

going the distance
when i do something
i like to do it right
take for instance,
destroying my knee

i wanted to make sure that i gave it my all

my surgeon (one of the best in the nation)
said that out of the 15000 knees he’s operated on
mine was one of the 200 worst he has ever seen

this guy has probably seen car wrecks
crowbar bashings
falls off 3 story buildings
pro sports players hit directly in the knee by human locomotives
matadors gored by bulls

yet mine takes the cake…

From MontereyMedia.com:

July 27, 2009 Thousand Oaks, CA- monterey media’s darkly capricious horror release, How to be a Serial Killer, opened during Comic-Con mania last Friday at the Gaslamp 15 to throngs of excited fans. The film, directed by Luke Ricci and starring Dameon Clarke (I Love You Philip Morris, “Prison Break” , “24″) and Matthew Gray Gubler (500 Days of Summer, “Criminal Minds”), was promoted heavily both inside and outside of the convention in San Diego.

Star Matthew Gray Gubler stopped by for a guest segment on Fox 5′s Morning Show with anchor Raoul Martinez & Arthel Neville while in town to promote the movie. Those attending the Comic-Con convention got their hands on special limited edition How to be a Serial Killer bumper stickers and the film’s newly minted comic book from Viper Comics. In addition, postcards flooding the convention center promoted a special offer for Comic-Con attendees to enjoy discounted admission to see the film’s premiere Friday night. An exclusive Q&A session at the 7 and 9pm showings featured appearances by stars Dameon Clarke, Matthew Gray Gubler and director Luke Ricci. Information regarding the limited edition How to be a Serial Killer bumper stickers and the Bumper Sticker Contest can be found on the film’s MySpace and Facebook. The film’s DVD release is sinisterly scheduled for October 13th.
